There are eight different white balance settings on the XSi, but only custom white balance give you the most accurate settings, based on exactly the light under which you are currently shooting, from the Magic Lantern DVD Guide to the Canon XSi

what if i, for any reason, can’t frame only the white card? is there any way to use a crop as white reference, or any other alternative?

Thank you for making this so easy to understand .the difference this has made to my photography is awesome .if only camera makers would put a such videos in the box ..let us be honest it would not cost an arm and a leg to do so and surely most camera buyers would not argue with this ..thanks again

now, if I am going to shoot pics at night, should I do the same thing as you suggested? With the flash on, would the CWB setting be the right mode?

True. But the problem is, with a greycard, you have technical perfect picture’s. The magic of a photo is the color’s temperature. Not every photo needs to look like an industrial commercial photo without the beautiful colors..

Help! I tried this exactly as stated but when I got to clicking the button for the photo it wouldn’t take the photo. I’m on a Canon Rebel XS. I’ve tried several times and still won’t take the photo. Any advice?

@connie94545
The camera just doesn’t recognize anything as an object to focus on. Try focusing somewhere else and go back to the piece of paper while holding the button half way.

Set the camera to manual focus mode. Then change back to auto when you take the picture
